Dormitories do both good and bad

WITH the new semester approaching, Yangzhou University in Jiangsu Province has found a visible way to help some of its poorer students: It has built some dormitories for poor students.

More than 50 of the school’s poorer students are now housed in two of these buildings. The major difference between these and other dorms is that the housing cost is 500 yuan a year. In other residence halls, students pay 700 yuan more.

The buildings have proven popular, and many students have applied to get in them. The university screens applications strictly, since they were built to ease the financial burden on poorer students.

And, it works.

“Living here can save me a lot of money,” said one freshman named Lou, who spends less than 3 yuan for three meals every day. “I’m poorer than many of the other students, but I work hard.”

There is a downside to this, however. Some students said that being made to live in a special buildings put them in an unfavourable light.

“I’d hoped to be treated just like other students,” said one student named Liu. “Living here makes me feel depressed. It seems that some inferior mark has been placed on the poorer students.”

Eyes Opened to Sound of Socks

Neil Harbisson is, quite literally, a man who has always viewed life in black and white. The 22-year-old Spaniard, who moved to Totnes in south Devon in 2003, was born with achromatopsia, a rare condition that affects only one person in 33,000 and causes monochromatism, or complete colour blindness. But last year, he was able to see – or, more accurately, hear - colours for the first time.

??
??But last year, he was able to see – or, more accurately, hear – colours for the first time. Harbisson has been fitted with a machine that turns colours into soundwaves, with a different sound representing each hue. The Eye-Borg, as it is known, features a head-mounted digital camera that reads the colours in front of Harbisson and converts them, via a laptop he carries in a backpack, into sound. A scale of musical tones represents the spectrum of colours – light hues are high-pitched, while darker colours sound bolder. It is, in a way, forced synaesthesia; its creator, 23-year-old digital multimedia expert Adam Montandon, describes the invention as “like hearing a colour wheel”.

??Harbisson has worn the Eye-Borg for every waking moment since last March, when he became the first person to be fitted with one. It even features in his passport photograph. Previously, it was as difficult for him to comprehend being surrounded by colour as it is for us to understand what it would be like to live in a black and white world.

??”I always felt I was missing out during conversations,” he says. “People do not realise how often they use colour when they are talking.”

??Simple acts, such as eating breakfast, were difficult, too. “If a foodstuff was not in its traditional shape, I couldn’t distinguish it,” he says. “I used to get jam mixed up with tomato sauce, and orange juice confused with apple juice. I had to ask people what a particular food was, or smell it, and when I was young, lots of people thought that was slightly odd behaviour.”

??At school, he was teased by classmates, who thought he was just being lazy every time he asked one of them to pass the red paint in an art class, or pick out a blue pen from his pencil case. He dressed exclusively in black and white. “What was the point in wearing something I couldn’t appreciate?” he asks.

??When we meet, Harbisson is wearing a bright orange jumper. Red socks poke out from under his jeans. These, he says, were the first colourful clothes he bought.

??”I walked past them in a shop, and thought, ’I like the sound of those socks, I’ll buy them’,” he smiles.

??The most dramatic impact of the Eye-Borg has been on his work. Remarkably, Harbisson chose to study art when he moved to Devon. Until he was fitted with Montandon’s invention, his canvases were daubed with only black, white and charcoals. Now, he has a palette of brightly coloured paints, and his work is full of bold and vibrant tones.

??”I now see my art as composing music on canvas,” says Harbisson, who also now “hears colours” when listening to music -he recently went to a concert where the female performer sang shades of yellow and, he says, the whirr of his Hoover is red. “Before, I was slightly afraid of my art. But now, it’s completely different. I am having so much fun with it, painting masses of objects that all have sounds.”

??His favourite new painting features only a blue sky and a garden full of green grass. It is the simplest, most childish creation of all, and yet, for Harbisson, it illustrates the enormous improvement the Eye-Borg has made to his life.

??It has also helped him to appreciate other people’s art. “Without the Eye-Borg, it was very hard for me to understand an artist’s use of colour,” he says. “If I looked at a painting, it seemed to be missing a layer. Now, I have that layer.”

??He has started to enjoy the paintings of Joan Miró, whose work in clear colour tones had always confused him. And on a visit to his home town of Barcelona, he was delighted by the work of Gaudi. “I walk around the city and listen to his architecture and it is amazing.”

??Before he was fitted with the Eye-Borg, he says he “hated the very existence of colour”. But now, he has a favourite shade-red, a tone that sounds as bold as it looks – although he is not very fond of brown or the so-called “middle-range” shades of blue, green and turquoise that, interestingly, many people who aren’t colour-blind find confusing.

Blackout New York drinks up

When a major power outage left even Times Square eerily dark, New York City’s faithful headed out of their hot apartments and stuffy office cubicles and did what came naturally. They headed to their local bars and grabbed a few cold ones — while they were still cold. “People were stuck and couldn’t get home so they thought, ‘why not gather at the local watering hole?’” said Joey Murphy, bartender at Ned Kelly’s, on Manhattan’s West Side. “It’s the best place to go when there’s no transportation.” Like hundreds of New York bars, Kelly’s was packed, hot, sticky, and lighted by candlelight. The crowd spilled onto the sidewalk, resigned to make the best of an otherwise miserable situation. At the Village Ma Bar and Grill in the West Village, customers packed side by side sat in dim candlelight, trying to stay cool by rolling up their sleeves and unbuttoning their shirts. “Most people are very happy and not too worried about anything,” said Ryan Good, a bartender at the Village Ma. “Of course, we’ll see how it is in a few hours,” he said. “The ice is melting, and the refrigerator is getting warmer, so I hope the power comes back soon.” Still, despite the laid-back atmosphere in most bars, a haunting undertone remained in most people’s minds about the last time New Yorkers were forced out onto the streets. “We’ve had a tough time here,” said Sean Connolly, owner of the Eatery Restaurant and Bar. “It was reminiscent of 9/11 with everyone pouring out in the streets.” Patrons at a bar downtown had similar thoughts. Mimi Banks said she decided to leave work after building management first told employees to evacuate and then told them to stay, bringing back nervous memories of the World Trade Centre attacks nearly two years ago. “We went home first, but then we just started walking, looking for a bar because there is nothing else to do,” Banks said? “This the best thing to do right now,” she said, presenting a cold beer still dripping with perspiration. With people unsure when the lights would come back on, many seemed resigned to participating in the impromptu Manhattan block party as long as possible. “I want to keep the place open as long as I can,” said Connolly, presiding over a dozen neighbours and regulars outside his restaurant and entertaining them with music through the open window of his Ford Expedition, parked at a curb nearby. “I can’t keep it open all night but want to keep it open as long as I can,” he said.

World’s biggest cruise liner arrives in England

The world’s biggest cruise liner sailed into its home port of Southampton on England’s south coast for the first time on Dec 26. Hundreds of onlookers watched as the $800 million vessel arrived, dwarfing a flotilla of small boats that sprayed jets of water into the air to greet the ship into Southampton’s docks. “This is a real moment in maritime history,” said John Brown, one of many people who crowded the shore to see the ship. The Queen Mary 2, which stands as high as a 23-story building, arrived from Saint-Nazaire in France where it was built. Fifteen people were killed when a temporary walkway collapsed as they were crossing it on a tour of the ship last month. The new British owner, Cunard Lines, said the welcome ceremony was subdued out of respect for those killed. The 150,000 ton ship will be officially named by Queen Elizabeth on January 8, four days before it leaves on its maiden cruise to Fort Lauderdale in Florida. Longer than three football pitches, the ship will carry about 3,000 passengers on its first cruise. A ticket for a top cabin costs around $50,000. The ship has more than 1,300 cabins including four royal suites and six penthouse apartments, and is serviced by a crew of more than 1,200 people.
